The Sr Underwriting Specialist is responsible for identifying, measuring, controlling and monitoring the risk for Production Underwriting.   Monitors underwriting defect trending at both the individual and global level and implements remediation plans to ensure defect rate remains at an acceptable level.  Resolves audit findings on mortgage loan files based on internal and/or Agency/Investor guidelines.  Relies on highly advanced underwriting knowledge to resolve escalated loan files, solve complex loan issues, and enact innovative solutions to resolve loan manufacturing quality defects.  This role is a key driver in ensuring that the company defect rate is at an acceptable level.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Monitors Underwriting production defect findings received from Risk, Insuring, Agency/Investors and/or Post Closing departments; identifies trends and high risk flags
  • Creates and implements individual and global remediation plans and training materials to mitigate defect trends
  • Validates accuracy of audit findings by reviewing loan file and documentation (income, credit, appraisal, title, etc); works with auditor to remove finding if inaccurate
  • Logs actions and resolutions into the Loan Trackers
  • Informs Production Underwriting of discrepancies in the file and provides direction on how to proceed, if applicable
  • Reviews complex or escalated loans received from Production Underwriting and/or Risk
  • Acts as Liaison between Risk, Post-closing, Insuring and Production Underwriting
  • Conduct random audits on production underwriters that are below quality expectations
  • Provides strong and clear communication to Production underwriters regarding documents needed to resolve delivery and/or insuring issues 
  • Serves as subject matter expert for Underwriting Guidelines, Credit Risk Policies and Underwriting Procedures
  • Stays current on all Agency and Investor Guidelines and risk trends
  • Underwrites and/or second signs special loan types and overflow files as needed
  • Adheres to all applicable internal NPI policies and procedures, and protects the confidentiality of borrower information
  • Special Projects As assigned

Core Requirements

  • Conforming mortgage underwriting experience for at least 5 years
  • FHA - Direct Endorsement (DE) designation for at least 3 years
  • VA - SARS designation for at least 3 years is recommended
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Exceptional understanding of Mortgage Origination systems
  • Prior experience involving multi-taking and detail-oriented responsibilities
